The original cathode-ray tube displays were generally of either 40 or 60 characters and fairly crude. As the technology developed the displays became more sophisticated and also heavier. The development of flatscreen displays was of benefit to everybody, particularly in commercial environments where space was at a premium.
The advances in flatscreen displays can be seen in the variety of tablets with touchscreen displays available at modest prices.
